Important Crime Prevention Advice – Theft of Vehicle Number Plates |
Dear Residents, We would like to make you aware that we have received reports of number plate thefts in the past week within the local area. Offenders commonly steal number plates to use on other vehicles involved in crime, including fuel theft, burglary, and to avoid detection by ANPR cameras.
To help protect your vehicle, please take a moment to review the following crime prevention advice. How to Reduce the Risk of Number Plate Theft 1. Use Tamper‑Proof / Anti‑Theft Screws Fitting anti‑tamper or one‑way security screws makes it extremely difficult for thieves to remove plates quickly. These are inexpensive and available from most automotive retailers or online. Police often distribute these free at community events. 2. Strong Adhesive Pads or Bonding Using automotive‑grade adhesive pads, either instead of or in addition to screws adds an extra layer of difficulty for anyone attempting to remove the plate. 3. Park in Well‑Lit or Secure Areas Parking in areas that are well lit, overlooked, or covered by CCTV significantly reduces the risk of tampering. If possible, use a garage or secure driveway. 4. Only Purchase Legal, DVLA‑Compliant Plates Some criminals clone number plates without physically stealing them—simply by copying registrations seen in public. Purchasing traceable, DVLA‑compliant plates helps ensure authenticity and reduces cloning risks. 5. Keep Your Vehicle Locked Even when parked outside your home, ensure that your vehicle is locked and windows are closed. Unlocked vehicles allow offenders to steal items or attempt tampering more easily.
If Your Number Plates Are Stolen Report it immediately online via the police website or by calling 101. Inform the DVLA so replacement plates can be issued. Monitor for any suspicious letters, fines, or notices linked to your registration that you do not recognise.
